Beverly Community Grieves After Apparent Murder-Suicide Claims Lives of Becky Lynn Center and John Patrick Nesbitt

BEVERLY, Mass. โ€” The quiet coastal community of Beverly is in mourning after a devastating tragedy that claimed two lives in what police are describing as an apparent murder-suicide inside a home on Colonial Drive late Monday night.

According to the Essex County District Attorneyโ€™s Office, officers from the Beverly Police Department responded to the residence shortly before 10:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting possible gunfire. When officers arrived, they discovered two adults โ€” identified as 58-year-old Becky Lynn Center and 56-year-old John Patrick Nesbitt โ€” dead inside the home from apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe Nesbitt fatally shot Center before turning the gun on himself. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and authorities say there are no signs of forced entry or evidence suggesting the involvement of any other individuals.

โ€œThis appears to be an isolated incident stemming from a domestic situation,โ€ District Attorney Paul Tucker said in a statement. โ€œOur hearts go out to the families and friends of both individuals as they navigate this unimaginable grief.โ€

Neighbors described a heavy police presence in the normally peaceful residential area Monday night, with officers and detectives working into the early morning hours to process the scene. โ€œItโ€™s absolutely heartbreaking,โ€ said one neighbor, who recalled seeing the couple walking their dog together in the evenings. โ€œYou just never think something like this could happen on your street.โ€

Becky Lynn Center, friends say, was a kindhearted woman known for her compassion and steady warmth. She worked for years as a caregiver and was deeply devoted to her family and community. โ€œBecky had a way of making everyone feel seen and cared for,โ€ said longtime friend Marcia Daniels. โ€œShe was selfless โ€” always putting others first.โ€

John Patrick Nesbitt, who neighbors said had lived in the home for several years, was known to be quiet but polite. Police have not released details about the nature of the coupleโ€™s relationship or what may have led to the deadly altercation.

The tragedy has left the Beverly community grappling with shock, sorrow, and unanswered questions. Local officials are urging anyone experiencing domestic conflict or emotional distress to seek help. โ€œThis tragedy underscores the importance of reaching out for support before situations escalate beyond control,โ€ said Mayor Michael Cahill. โ€œResources are available, and no one should suffer in silence.โ€

Grief counselors are being made available through local support organizations and the Beverly Police Departmentโ€™s community outreach program. A small memorial of flowers and candles has begun to form outside the home on Colonial Drive, as friends and neighbors come together to honor the lives lost.

โ€œTwo lives ended too soon,โ€ said one mourner quietly. โ€œItโ€™s just so sad. Beverly is a small, tight-knit town, and this has shaken all of us.โ€

The Essex County District Attorneyโ€™s Office and Beverly Police Department continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, though authorities emphasize that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
