In Loving Memory of Roderick MacLeod

The Rhode Island music community is mourning the tragic and untimely loss of Roderick MacLeod, a beloved 70-year-old musician whose life was cut short in a senseless accident on Saturday morning. Known for his soulful performances and unwavering dedication to his craft, MacLeod touched countless lives with his music, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to resonate with fans, friends, and fellow musicians for years to come.

The heartbreaking incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, while MacLeod was enjoying one of his cherished morning routines: walking his dog along the shoulder of the road.

MacLeod โ€” a Grammy-nominated bassist and member of the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame โ€” was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Hopkinton Police Department, Shannon Godbout, 41, a woman with a criminal history exceeding 100 arrests, veered out of her lane and struck multiple objects, including two telephone poles, before colliding with MacLeod.

Authorities reported that Godbout was found at the scene in possession of numerous illegal narcotics and packaging materials commonly associated with drug distribution. She was immediately arrested and charged with driving so as to endanger resulting in death, as well as possession of narcotics, Schedule I/II, with intent to distribute, third or subsequent offense.

Friends and family describe MacLeod as not only a gifted musician but also a kind and gentle soul. He was known for his warm smile, his generosity, and the way he could light up a room with a song. Whether performing at local venues or simply sharing a tune with neighbors and loved ones, MacLeodโ€™s passion for music was infectious, and his commitment to fostering community through his art made him a cherished figure in Rhode Islandโ€™s cultural scene.

โ€œRoderick had a way of making everyone feel special when he played,โ€ said a longtime friend and fellow musician. โ€œHis music wasnโ€™t just entertainmentโ€”it was an invitation to connect, to feel, and to celebrate life. Losing him this way is just heartbreaking.โ€

The Hopkinton community is also reeling from the tragedy. MacLeodโ€™s morning walks were a common sight, and many residents knew him from his routine strolls with his beloved dog. The suddenness of his death has left neighbors shocked and mourning, highlighting the devastating consequences of reckless and impaired driving.

Law enforcement officials have emphasized the seriousness of the charges against Godbout, noting the potential dangers posed by individuals with repeated criminal behavior operating vehicles, particularly when drugs are involved. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence as the legal process unfolds, ensuring that justice is pursued for MacLeod and his grieving family.

Funeral arrangements for Roderick MacLeod are being planned by his family, who have requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time. Friends, fans, and the broader Rhode Island community are encouraged to honor his memory by celebrating the music he created, the lives he touched, and the joy he brought into the world.

In remembering Roderick MacLeod, we not only mourn the loss of a talented musician but also reflect on the fragility of life and the profound impact one individual can have through art, kindness, and a love for community.
