MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. — The quiet town of Middlefield is reeling from shock and sorrow following the tragic deaths of two beloved residents, 74-year-old Jean Amiot and 69-year-old Anna Amiot, who were found deceased inside their home on the corner of Peters Lane and Spring Street on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Connecticut State Police, emergency responders were dispatched to the residence around 2:15 p.m. after a concerned neighbor called authorities, saying they had not seen the couple for several days. Upon entering the home, troopers discovered the bodies of Jean and Anna in what officials have described as “a deeply distressing scene.”
While the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under active investigation, police have confirmed that there were no immediate signs of forced entry. Detectives from the State Police Major Crime Squad spent much of Tuesday evening combing through the property, gathering evidence and interviewing neighbors as they worked to determine what led to the tragedy.
Jean and Anna Amiot were longtime residents of Middlefield, remembered fondly by neighbors and friends as kindhearted, devoted, and deeply community-oriented. Jean, a retired mechanical engineer, was known for his love of woodworking, classic cars, and helping others with home projects. Anna, who had worked for many years as a nurse at a local medical center, was remembered as a warm and compassionate woman who devoted her life to caring for others.
“They were the kind of couple everyone admired,” said neighbor Carla Benson, holding back tears. “Always together, always smiling. You couldn’t ask for better people to live next to.”
The couple’s passing has sent waves of grief throughout Middlefield, a close-knit community where many residents have known the Amiots for decades. Friends and family gathered outside the home Tuesday night, leaving flowers and candles along the roadside in tribute to the couple’s memory.
First Selectman Edward Bailey issued a statement expressing condolences on behalf of the town. “Jean and Anna were pillars of our community — kind, generous, and deeply respected. Their loss is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with their loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable time.”
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform autopsies to determine the official causes of death. Authorities have not released further details, but investigators have emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public.
As the community mourns, local churches and support groups are offering counseling and grief resources to residents affected by the tragedy. A candlelight vigil is being planned later this week at Peckham Park to honor Jean and Anna’s lives and the legacy of love and kindness they leave behind.
“This town won’t be the same without them,” said longtime friend Robert Lang. “They were the heart of this neighborhood — and their memory will live on in all of us.”
