HILTON, N.Y. โ The Hilton community is reeling from heartbreak after the tragic death of Rob Faber, a longtime construction worker and cherished friend, who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday while on the job.
Authorities said the fatal incident occurred in a work zone along a residential stretch in Hilton, where Faber and his crew had been completing a roadway project. Despite immediate efforts by first responders and coworkers to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Faber, known throughout the area for his strong work ethic, easygoing nature, and deep loyalty to his friends and family, leaves behind a community devastated by his sudden and senseless loss.
โHe was one of those people everyone knew and loved,โ said longtime friend and coworker Mike Davenport. โRob showed up every day with a smile, ready to help anyone. He wasnโt just a coworkerโhe was family to all of us.โ
The Monroe County Sheriffโs Office and New York State Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating fully with authorities. Officials have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed, but they emphasized the importance of exercising extreme caution when driving through active work zones.
Sheriff Todd Baxter expressed condolences to the victimโs family, noting that roadway construction crews face dangerous conditions every day.
โOur hearts go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of Mr. Faber,โ Baxter said. โThis tragedy is a sobering reminder of how critical it is for drivers to slow down and stay alert in construction areas. These workers put their lives at risk to make our roads safer.โ
Faber had worked in the construction industry for more than two decades and was well-known across Monroe County for his craftsmanship and dedication. Colleagues described him as a steady, dependable presence who often mentored younger workers and took pride in every project he touched.
โHe loved what he did,โ said one coworker. โHe always said there was something special about building things that would lastโroads, sidewalks, homesโthat people would use for years. That was his legacy.โ
Outside of work, Rob Faber was deeply rooted in the Hilton community. Friends say he could often be found lending a hand at local events, cheering on youth sports teams, or helping neighbors with home repairsโnever expecting anything in return.
Social media has been flooded with tributes from those who knew him best, many sharing stories of his kindness and humor. โRob was one of the good ones,โ one post read. โHe worked hard, loved hard, and made everyoneโs day a little better.โ
As his family prepares for funeral arrangements, coworkers have set up a makeshift memorial at the worksite, with orange safety cones, flowers, and handwritten notes marking the place where he last stood.
Community members are calling for increased safety measures and stronger enforcement of work zone speed limits to prevent future tragedies. โNo family should ever have to go through this,โ said a local resident. โThese workers deserve to come home at the end of the day.โ
As Hilton grieves the devastating loss of Rob Faber, his memory will live on through the roads he helped build, the friendships he forged, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to his craft.
