WEST YORKSHIRE, England — Kyle Bevan, 33, the convicted child killer who brutally murdered his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, was found dead in his prison cell at HMP Wakefield on Wednesday morning. Police have arrested three inmates in connection with his death as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to the high-security facility at around 8:25 a.m. following reports of an inmate found unresponsive. Prison staff initiated emergency medical procedures, but Bevan was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward. Authorities have since treated the death as suspicious and have begun a full homicide investigation.
Bevan had been serving a life sentence for the murder of two-year-old Lola James, a crime that deeply shocked and horrified the public. The young child suffered catastrophic injuries in an attack at her home in 2020, leading to her death in hospital days later. During the trial, prosecutors described the attack as a sustained and violent assault that left the toddler with severe head trauma and multiple bruises. Bevan was convicted of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in prison.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said, “A 33-year-old prisoner at HMP Wakefield was found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday morning. Despite the best efforts of staff and emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an independent investigation.”
Bevan’s death has reignited widespread public discussion, with many expressing strong reactions given the nature of his crime. While some view his death as a grim form of justice, others have emphasized the importance of due process and safety within the prison system, regardless of an inmate’s past.
Forensic officers were seen entering and exiting the facility throughout the day, and the investigation remains ongoing. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
